Weekly Athletic Recap- 3/20

Weekly Athletic  Recap

Below is our weekly recap for the week of March 20th!

Congrats to our Athlete of the Week - Basketball Seniors: Tyler Scarpulla, Lucas Orchard, Jack Regan, Jacen Holloway, Duke Harrer, and Gavin D’Iorio

Varsity Basketball

Unfortunately, the varsity basketball season came to an end this weekend in a heartbreaking loss to Trinity in overtime. The team fought very hard but came up just short as Trinity scored with about 15 seconds left and Devon could not recover. Huge congratulations to the six seniors for all that they gave to the program in the last four years: Duke Harrer, Tyler Scarpulla, Gavin D’Iorio, Jack Regan, Jacen Holloway and Lucas Orchard, the impact that you have had not only on the basketball program but the Devon Prep Athletic Department and the school will be felt for years to come.

Varsity Baseball

The Devon Prep Tide fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 10-0 loss to Lower Merion on Friday. Lower Merion took the lead in the first inning. The Tide struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Lower Merion, giving up ten runs. Joe Ficoturo ‘24 took the loss for the Tide. The hurler lasted two innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out four and walking one.

JV Baseball

Devon Prep Junior Varsity Tide had a tough time generating runs on Friday, dropping their game with Lower Merion High School 18-3. Brian McGowan ‘26 was on the mound for the Tide. The hurler lasted two innings, allowing three hits and three runs while striking out three and walking one. Colin Carey ‘25 and Liam Jung ‘26 entered the game from the bullpen, throwing two innings and two innings respectively. Devon Prep Junior Varsity Tide collected seven hits. Hudson Swan ‘26 and Chris Bruno ‘25 each had multiple hits for Devon Prep. Bruno and Swan all had two hits to lead the team.

Varsity Lacrosse

The Devon Prep Varsity lacrosse team got their season started off under the lights at Harriton High School. Unfortunately, the varsity had a much tougher game than the JV, losing to Rams 8-1. The Tide had some fantastic play by goalie Cole Brassington '23 with 10 saves on 18 shots. The sole goal by the Tide was Nicko D'Allesandro '24 and assisted by Eammon Donovan '24. The Varsity will have a game this Thursday against The Shipley School, at the Proving Grounds in Conshohocken.

JV Lacrosse

The Devon Prep JV lacrosse team kicked off their season this past Friday night at Harriton High School in Bryn Mawr. The JV was the first to play, and finished with their first win of the season, a 5-3 Victory. Scoring was led by Declan Sullivan '26 and Dylan Kenneson '25 with two goals each. Evan Young '26 added another goal. The Tide had some outstanding goalie play by Grant Gale '26 and Ian McDermott '25.Grant allowed only 1 goal in the first three quarters and Ian came into close the victory out.

Tennis

The Devon Prep Tennis team had their first match of this early spring season against Holy Ghost Prep. The Tide played 3 singles and 4 doubles today since Holy Ghost only brought 11 players. The Tide who came up victorious during their matches included Pierce Rohlfing ‘25 who played a very talented opponent and battled for 2 hours at 1st singles, Ron Wolfe ‘24 and Diego Alonso ‘24 at 2nd doubles, James Gabriele ‘25 and John Barnhart ‘25 at 3rd doubles, and Cole Wingerd ‘25 and Jake Hirst ‘26 at 4th doubles. Chris Rohner ‘25 lost a tough match 3-6, 3-6 at 2nd singles, Nace Barry ‘26 lost at 3rd singles, and we lost 1st doubles (Will Shank ‘26 and Liam MacDonald ‘25) 6-7, 0-6. The pair played an extremely close tiebreaker and lost it in the first set and just couldn’t recover in the second set. Overall, it was a great first outing for the team! On Friday the Tide tennis team had another close match but came up short against Phoenixville High School. We played a total of 7 matches and we lost 3-4. Wins were at 1st doubles (Liam Macdonald ‘25 / James Gabriele ‘25) 3rd doubles (Ron Wolfe ‘24 / Diego Alonso ‘24) and 4th doubles (Jake Hirst ‘26 / Cole Wingerd ‘25).
